Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) Applications

In 1974, Mangosuthu Buthelezi came up with the idea of creating a tertiary education institution that specialises in technical subjects. Funds weren’t immediately available, but they began researching the potential in South Africa. In the middle of 1977, the go-ahead was given, and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT) was opened for teaching in 1979. The university was initially known as Mangosuthu Technikon but was renamed Mangosuthu University of Technology in November 2007. MUT is located in Umlazi, which is on the outskirts of Durban in South Africa. 

There are three faculties at MUT. These are the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Management Sciences, and the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The Faculty of Engineering includes Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Surveying, Construction Management and Quantity Surveying, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The Faculty of Management Sciences includes Accounting and Law, Communication, Human Resource Management, Marketing, Office Management and Technology, and Public Administration and Economics. The Faculty of Natural Sciences includes Agriculture, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry, Community Extension, Environmental Health, Information Communications and Technology, Mathematical Sciences, and Nature Conservation.

MUT also has a Centre for Algal Biotechnology, which is first in South Africa, and one of a few internationally. This focuses on integrating microalgal research with commercial industries. MUT also has a wide range of extracurricular activities, ranging from a variety of sports to political organisations as well as different religious groups.

Apply to MUT

To apply to MUT, you will need to apply via CAO. To get the application form, you will need to do one of the following:

1. Apply through the website https://www.cao.ac.za/

2. Contact the Central Applications Office (CAO) on 031 268 4444.

3. Download the forms off https://www.cao.ac.za/

CAO allows you to apply for more than one programme and only pay a single application fee. If you want to study at MUT, you need to ensure that you put MUT down as your first choice. 

If your MUT application is successful, MUT will inform you via SMS. The SMS will contain:

• Your student number.
• The course code that you have been accepted into.
• The date you can register.

There will also be a link in the SMS that will lead you to a document that will assist you with registration and other information.

There is also a bursary that you can apply for, called the VALSPAR bursary. This bursary only applies to Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Industrial Engineering.

If you are accepted to study at MUT, you will need to pay a R500 acceptance fee. This acceptance fee is non-refundable and will form part of your deposit after registration. 

MUT does not accept applications in person, and all applications need to go through the CAO. They also don’t accept late applications. 

Final year students will also need to apply for graduation, and they will need to include a certified copy of their ID.

Application Requirements

The following documents are needed to be submitted along with your MUT application:

South African Applicants:

1. National Senior Certificate (NSC) or statement of results
2. Copy of your Identity Document
3. If you are transferring from another university, then you need to submit your academic record as well as a certificate of good conduct

Non-South African Applicants:

1. A valid study permit
2. Proof of valid medical aid or health insurance cover
3. A valid passport
4. GCE, GCSE, IGCSE or Cambridge School Certificate

You need to have acquired at least 50% in English and Maths, and at least five of your subjects need to have a 50% to 59% pass rate. Different faculties might have different requirements, and this is listed in the CAO handbook.

Application Dates

Applications close on the following dates:

Faculty of Engineering: 30th of September (first semester) and 31st of May (second semester)

Faculty of Natural Sciences: 30th of September

Analytical Chemistry: 31st of May (second semester)

Faculty of Management Sciences: 30th of September

Any applications that are submitted after the 30th of September will incur a late fee and this is determined by the CAO.

Registration

Online registration is only done through iEnabler, and MUT does not accept walk-ins. All registrations are subject to a payment of R1500 for semester students and R2500 for annual students. Registration closes on the 9th of April 2021.

How to register online for Mangosuthu University:

1. Go to MUT’s website.
2. Click on Student Portal at the top of the page.
3. Click on Student iEnabler in the grey block on the right-hand side of the page.
4. Click on Student.
5. In the Student Number field, enter your Student Number that was sent to you in the sms.
6. Enter your PIN or the default pin (46579) if you have not changed it yet.
7. Click on Login.
8. Once you have logged in, click on Registration on the left side of the page.
9. Click on Rules and Regulations.
10. Scroll down, and click ‘I Accept.’
11. Click on Submit Registration on the left of the page.
12. Click on Your Employment Status, and choose Unemployed.
13. Click Save and Continue.
14. A list of subjects that you can register for will appear. Choose your subjects.
15. Click on Save and Continue.
16. Click on Continue.
17. Click on Accept Registration.
18. Once your registration is complete, you can click on Proof of Registration on the left-hand side of the page.
19. Print your registration status if you like.
20. Your student card will be activated on campus.

MUT also offers residence for its students. Students will first need to apply for residence through iEnabler, and once accepted, the student will have to register for accommodation through iEnabler as well. 

Deposit fees for registration need to be paid directly to MUT, and you will only be able to register a day after payment has been made. You will need to use your student number as your reference. Any queries regarding payments and fees need to go to student.debtors@mut.ac.za.

Conclusion

While MUT’s website doesn’t have a very comprehensive step by step information to assist with applying, they provide you with the basics. They also encourage students to contact the university through various channels if they get stuck with anything at all. MUT is very clear about not allowing on-campus applications and registration, which is more than likely due to COVID. The university makes it easy enough for students to contact them if they need any assistance.
