How to apply & registration
Since the pandemic, there are only online applications and can be filled in via the link http://www.cao.ac.za/. Here you will have to fill in many of your details such as name, surname, identity document or passport and cellphone number.
After this, you will have to submit more personal details about yourself, such as marital status and financial aid etc. Next, a new page will appear where you will need to pay the R250 application fee or the R300 for international students, as well as upload your required documents. These are as follows:
- Certified copy of identity document or passport
- Grade 12 certificate
Please remember that your application and fee needs to reach the CAO before the closing date. A submission does not mean that you have been accepted as a student or entitled to register. All applicants will be informed by SMS of the result of the application.
The Minimum requirements for admission for NCV level 4 applicants:
Higher Certificate:
National Certificate – Level 4 with at least 50% in English.
Diploma:
National Certificate – Level 4 with the following minimum requirements:
1. At least 50% in three primary subjects including, English; and
2. At least 60% in three compulsory vocational
Bachelor’s Degree:
A National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4 with the following minimum requirements:
1. At least 60% in three primary subjects, including English; and
2. At least 70% in four compulsory vocational subjects, chosen from the National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4
For Higher Certificate:
● A National Senior Certificate (NSC) – with a least rating of 3 for English.
For Diploma:
● a National Senior Certificate (NSC) – with a least rating of 3 for English and a minimum performance rating of 3 in four approved NSC 20-credit subjects.
For Bachelor’s Degree:
● a National Senior Certificate (NSC) – with a least rating of 3 for English and of 4 in four NSC 20-credit subjects chosen assigned subject list.
Additionally, with these minimum entrance requirements, each department faculty has a particular entrance requirement as well, depending on the field of study.
Applicants who wish to enrol for the programmes must apply through the CAO system by no later than 30 November of the previous year. This will ensure that their application is valid and will have a higher chance of being reviewed to get accepted.

Registration
This takes place after making your applications are accepted.

At this point in time, all applications to the undergraduate are online and can be done through the Central Applications Office (www.coa.ac.za)

Bursaries
Bursaries are granted to students in terms of the criteria specified by the donors or sponsors. The choice of bursary receivers will be based on their financial need, academic potential, and field of study, etc.
Undergraduate Scholarship: For New Students (First Academic Period)
This bursary award is offered to a first-year student who is studying fulltime and is South African. They will need to have achieved outstanding results in the Maric year to have qualified for the bursary.
A student who has a National Senior Certificate with 80% or higher will qualify for the entire (100%) tuition fees to be reduced for the first year of registration. A student who has a National Senior Certificate with 70% – 79% will be able to qualify for half (50%) of the tuition fees to be reduced in the first year of registration.
Guide for Financial Aid
Financial aid is awarded to full-time registered students only. The students have to be South African citizens, and the allocation of the funds is based on financial need and academic merit. It is also awarded based on conditions arranged by the donors, sponsors and DUT. The funds allocated to students are paid directly to the student’s fee account. Donors are allowed to have access in detail to how the money is spent in the account.
The Durban University of Technology Centre for Entrepreneurship & Innovation
This is a place for entrepreneurs to enhance their thinking through thinking, action and training. There is also access to business start-up measures in place. The centre is for students, post-grad students and community members. The goal of the centre is to build successful and sustainable student and community enterprises.

It’s a contract form in which the university takes no responsibility for what happens in and around the two campus buildings. All the responsibility falls on to the student and their parent or legal guardian.
This includes any injuries or theft.
If fees are not paid on time, the student cannot attend classes or access other resources.
If you don’t attend, you will still pay.
You must follow the code of conduct given to you during the selection process.
- Surety-ship form
Similar to the indemnity form, this binds you to the payments and legal consequences of not paying on time. You may have to pay for debt collectors calling you and making separate agreements on the condition you pay anyway. You need to provide your postal address and have a witness sign with you and it must be certified.
- M65 DUT Deposit slip
It’s Used to pay in any registration fees and is provided by Standard Bank.

Registration fees cost R250 per South African prospective student and R300 per International student.
There are 3 ways to pay:
- The payment portal on the website
upon registration, you can visit the portal on your own and use the option to pay.
- Direct deposit via Standard Bank
using the deposit form or the payment details that appear as follows.
- EFT Payment with the assigned student number as your reference
Mostly electronic using bank account numbers via computer or mobile. The money typically reflects in 24 hours.
How much do you need to pay?
International Students:
R4200 for annual registration (both semesters)
R2570 for semester registration
South African Students:
R8480 for annual registration (both semesters)
R5190 for semester registration
There are individual fees for each faculty and course for the total tuition.
For international students, there are additional requirements.
These include:
- proof of medical aid membership
- study visa obtained from home country – you need to be there during the process
- medical and radiological certificate of good health.
Residence and Accommodation
As a general guide:
- The residence is not guaranteed when you apply and are accepted into the university. It’s strictly first-come, first-serve
- Use your student reference number on the site to register
- Make sure that you have a confirmation letter and pay a deposit to secure your residence
- Please read the contract well before you move in
- Make sure that you can afford to stay there, even with a bursary. Prepare by shopping and finding a part-time job if you can.
- you can only live near your campus of attendance.
The process has been simplified due to moving the process online and not needing to travel to the campus buildings and stand in long queues.
